![]() Another solution depending on manufacturer is to pay for online technical information system (TIS) access and download what you need. However, these are often expensive, and not everyone can afford to drop three figures on repair literature. I’m not talking about a Haynes or Chilton manual you can grab from a bookstore or your local library, but instead something more in-depth like a Bentley manual or a factory service manual. One way to wrench with the aid of images if forum threads go dead is to buy a proper service manual. However, Imgur’s strategy means it might not be possible to bring disappearing embedded images back out of the ether. Presumably in the hopes of account retention, Photobucket held onto a bunch of photos and quick-thinking independent coders wrote browser extensions to fix the broken embeds. However, most images themselves weren’t actually vaporized. Suddenly, a whole bunch of visual aids for fixing everything from imported Nissan Pulsar Gti-Rs to clapped-out Land Rover Discovery 2s disappeared from forums as people just didn’t want to pay for hosting. We’ve already seen something like this when Photobucket decided to discontinue free hosting in 2017. It’s these threads that are most at risk of disappearing should a photo host decide to shut off the taps. However, fixes for obscure problems or cars that aren’t thick on the ground may only have one or two threads documenting repairs. Part of the problem is frequency bias – if a problem occurs often enough to be common and it happens on a relatively plentiful platform, chances are that multiple people across multiple platforms have documented repairs. Needless to say, we’ve reached out to Imgur for clarification on what constitutes “unused” and “inactive” images, but there’s a chance this could be a bigger problem than we expect. More dedicated and tech-savvy users may have created Imgur profiles, but part of the platform’s appeal is that it was ridiculously easy for anyone and everyone to easily upload pictures that could be embedded on internet forums. However, lots of people didn’t sign up for user accounts and instead just posted photos. If you ported over your forum username to upload pictures, your images are theoretically safe. The latest update to the company’s Terms of Service claims specifically that “We will be focused on removing old, unused, and inactive content that is not tied to a user account from our platform.” So is Imgur torching the Library of Alexandria? Not entirely, but there’s still cause for concern.Īccording to Imgur, not all images will be deleted. ![]() Image hosting site Imgur recently announced that it will be deleting a bunch of old photos starting May 15, and that could make wrenching at home a little bit more difficult. Another source of information is preparing to shut off the taps. The colors are bright and the style is nice. That said, most of the game is spent zoomed all the way out, so it still looked fine. There is little character customization, you can choose the tunic color but that’s about it. The models are janky, occasionally dogs will have a nice big crease down the middle, and your character’s hands are incapable of properly holding on to weapons, often resting the sword gently on their knuckles. Visually, Titan Quest is about what you would expect from a 2007 game at the highest graphics settings. The Nature mastery can summon wolves and briar thorns, the Storm mastery can summon, well, storms, and the Warfare mastery can scream so loud it buffs everyone’s strength and summons the ethereal spirits of ancient champions. All kinds of buffs and auras can be found, and each mastery has their own unique powers. Why wouldn’t you want to be a dagger wielding rogue who can summon an earth golem on the side? Each of the classes in Titan Quest has both passive and active skills. While some masteries have better synergy than others, all combinations are completely viable. Each character gains a mastery at level two and another at level eight. These masteries range from the standard sword and board of Warrior or Defense, to the spell casting variety of Dream or Storm. There are ten different classes, (nine in the base game, Titan Quest: Ragnarok adds the tenth), called “masteries,” for you to choose from. Building up your character is the main point of this style of game. Of course, the story of Titan Quest is just a medium for giving you a reason to hack and to slash. With the mortal realm having their connection to the realm of the gods severed by a mysterious race of demons called the Telkines, it is up to you to trek across the continent and assist the surviving armies of Greece, Egypt, and China in fighting off the monster hordes. You play as either a male or female human who finds themselves in the midst of a monster apocalypse, with hordes of all kinds of mythical horrors pouring into the world of man. ![]() Players will interpret the prophecies of the blind seer Tiresias, fight alongside Agamemnon and Achilles, and use the wiles of Odysseus to conquer this dark new adventure. The premise of Titan Quest is about what you would expect for a Greek-themed Diablo 2. ![]() In this epic quest of good versus evil, players will encounter the greatest villains of Greek mythology, brave the attacks of Cerberus, and hazard the banks of the River Styx. Its not the closed source nature of many products that make them ‘bad’ but the ethics and philosophy of the developers. In many cases, I will choose a product with less features in exchange for privacy and configurability. I’d still rather use Joplin than Evernote, Onenote, etc despite the missing features. Despite that, after years of waiting it still hasn’t manged to deliver what I need. It’s really great, has excellent developers, great community and features are added and refined regularly, even quickly. ![]() As an example, my favorite note taking app, prior to finding Obsidian, was Joplin. I use Thunderbird, Firefox, Nextcloud over Google Drive or One Drive, Bitwarden for passwords, etc.īut in some cases open source is not better and cannot deliver what’s required, for my purposes, in the time I need it. I have been using Linux (mostly Mint, MX) on all my PC’s for many years because it’s superior in many ways to OSX and Windows. I find that in many cases open source products are better for me than proprietary. I love the idea of free and open source software. This reminded me that free lunch does not last forever. I especially became conscious about this after spending quite a while migrating CI scripts from Travis across all my OSS projects to GH Actions (unfortunately, they are way more powerful than Gitlab CI and some projects cannot simply move from Github for org reasons but it’s good to know there is an open alternative). Note that all of those tools not only keep the source closed but also have a proprietary note format.įor the context, I am a paying user of Dynalist Pro (I am assuming = Erica at, thank you for Dynalist!) and I am making small donations to for that exact reason: I want to know if the company loses interest in the project (either financial or just sells the company), I will not be left with a broken workflow. I want the same for Obsidian (both because I am rooting for and and because I want the tool I will use for many years to be sustainable and supported). Everyone lecturing on how to develop a product should look at Evernote, Notion, and Roam, which seem to be doing well. I am happy to pay for Obsidian if I find it to fit well into my workflow. I think the discussion has drifted a bit so I wanted to post a reply specifically supporting this option ( does not mention anything yet.). I think having a privacy statement and a pledge to open up code access if Obsidian discontinues are good ideas, but open sourcing does not make sense given the current circumstances. There are business models that rely and operate on open source but the concept or practice of open source itself, is not a business model. I don’t know a great deal about them (so maybe the comparison would break down at some point) but they’ve certainly been around for while, are focused on longevity, and provide a free and open source note / kb application while operating within a commercial business context (albeit the StandardNotes model provides different services than Obsidian’s). Perhaps there are things they can learn from one another but there’s no sense comparing them as commercial business models since only one of the two fit that description.Īn interesting comparison that might be apt however, would probably be something like Standard Notes ( ). ![]() Yes, people can spend the night in both however the scenario and goals of each establishment are completely different. ![]() I would argue that it’s akin to discussing how to make money from running a hotel and claiming that a community homeless shelter proves you can’t make money by offering people a place to sleep. Paying off the auto loan early or adding a prepayment amount each month, shortens the period of time that the loan is in place and also decreases the total amount of interest that you will pay on the loan in the long run. If you can manage to either increase your payments, or apply a lump sum toward the principal balance, you can consider doing so by using this calculator by crunching some numbers.
